“Rain water is naturally soft but as it travels underground it dissolves the limestone rock and becomes hard. As the hard water travels through your house it leaves a trail of scale behind. You see it in your kettle and around the taps in the kitchen sink and on the drainer, in your shower rose, as spot marks on the shower door and in the toilet bowl. But it’s where you don’t see it that it causes the most damage inside your cooper cylinder the scale Is building up right now and one day it will end up in the scrap yard just like all the others.
Here is a diagram of a house showing the plumbing system. This is the rising main coming in and feeding the kitchen sink and then up into the roof to the storage tanks for the water and for the central heating. From here it comes down and feeds the copper cylinder and the boiler. It is here right inside the copper cylinder that your major heat loss occurs. This is the heat exchanger and the immersion heater. When new the heat transfers immediately into the water, very efficiently, but when the exchanger is covered in scale the transfer is much slower as the heat has to get through the scale. Softened water will remove the scale and the heat exchanger will work at full efficiency again. The cost of this scale is quite staggering, these are official government figures. Just one eighth of an inch of scale will increase your fuel bill by 15% and a quarter of an inch of scale will increase your full bill by over 50%.”
